"Through the ecoBiz program, Ferra Engineering identified two initiatives that would substantially increase the company’s production efficiency:

• swarf (metal shaving) briquetting, and
• coolant recycling.

Swarf briquetting involves compressing aluminium shavings into 500g blocks, which are then sold to be reused. Now 90–95 percent of all waste metals go through the swarf briquetting process.

The coolant that is squeezed from the shavings is cleaned on-site, allowing it to be reused in machinery.
This saves money, reduces the toxicity of material sent off-site for disposal, and reduces the amount of
material by 40 tonnes a year.

Ferra Engineering is also now using an organic coolant that lasts indefinitely and can be disposed of
without any environmental risk." - ecoBIZ Queensland Government
